Aeroponics keeps plant roots suspended in the air, misting them with a nutrient solution, whereas hydroponics employs a water-based nutrient solution, which may or may not include a growing medium.

Aquaponics merges hydroponics with aquaculture, utilizing fish waste to nourish plants.

Hydroponics is characterized by a system where crops grow with their roots directly immersed in a nutrient-rich water solution, either continuously (raft systems) or intermittently (ebb and flow systems), and can function without any growth medium or with inert materials like rock wool, coconut fiber, perlite, gravel, or expanded clay.

Aeroponics operates similarly, using a nutrient-rich water solution that is sprayed onto the roots and lower stems or aerosolized in a humid environment.
Aquaponics integrates hydroponics with aquaculture, typically focusing on fish that can be raised for consumption. In an aquaponics setup, fish produce ammonia-rich waste, which is largely converted into nitrate and nitrite by beneficial bacteria. The nutrient-laden water nourishes the plants, which subsequently assist in purifying the water for the fish.

Vertical farming typically denotes stacked growing systems, where crops are cultivated not just in rows on a single level but in layers, one above the other.
